“It’s almost as if the entire population of North American is on a low-grade antibiotic diet day in day out from birth, everyday, this is the reality.” Dr Thierry Vrain, former pro-gmo scientist
The following are the 'cliff notes' from the video at the end of this blog by Dr Thierry Vrain on the health consequences of eating GMO 'Roundup Ready' foods, the active ingredient of which is 'glyphosate'.
Note: the New Zealand government is currently passing laws to INCREASE the levels of glyphosate in New Zealand crops, AND stop labelling of all GMO foods in New Zealand (see links at end of blog for more info on this).
History of Roundup (Glyphosate)
All GMO's are 'roundup ready' - ie the crops are engineered (GMOd) so they are ready to be sprayed with round up herbicide (weed killer). Herbicides kill plants.
The active ingredient in Roundup is glyphosate.
Glyphosate binds to metal, making the metals non-reactive and non-available. It was invented in 1960 at Stanford, originally to clean up industrial pipes and boilers - this method of cleaning up is called 'scaling' - ie, glyphosate is a de-scaling agent, eg when you de-scale your kettle
Glyphosate was patented in 1964
The inventors discovered that when they disposed of the de-scaled water in nature, it killed plants. This was how they discovered it could be used as a weed killer.
So glyphosate was re-patented as a herbicide in 1969. And then registered and commercialized in 1974.
It was said to be safe, ie have no residual. This is clearly now been proven to not be true.
1996 - first roundup ready crops (ie GMOd crops) were soy and corn - ie, they were now ready to be sprayed with roundup weedkiller (herbicide), ie glyphosate
'Round up ready crop' means it has been engineered to be RESISTANT to the herbicide (plant killer) called round up (glyphosate)
By 2014 nearly 100% soy, corn, cotton, sugar beet, canola are engineered to be round up ready.
When sprayed on the plants, the chemical infuses into every cell.
Glyphosate de-mineralizes the plants. The metals (enzymes) become bio-unavailable.
This was shown by the fact that 2 pounds of minerals are missing in a bushel of corn.
2005 - glyphosate starts to be used as a dessicant - dries crops before harvest because this is easier for harvesting
2001 - patent filed for glyphosate as an antibiotic, and used as an antibiotic since 2010 - many bacteria are killed by this very broad spectrum antibiotic. Salmonella and Clostridia bacteria are resistant to glyphosate.
HEALTH CONSEQUENCES
The microbiome is in charge of the immune system
Asthma and allergies a good sign of damage to microbiome
Coeliac is the result of damage to microbiome as a result of glyphosate (not gluten)
Glyphosate:
damages microbiome
toxifies cells and the toxification accumulates
causes inflammation
disrupts endocrine system
kills cells (apoptosis)
reduces testosterone
damages liver and kidneys (2012 study retracted after Monsanto scientist put on editorial journal board)
shown in rat studies to cause tumours
shown to cause breast cancer
causes birth defects
bio accumulates in organs
Shown to have link to autism
Shown to correlate with dementia, obesity and more
Legal levels keep being increased in food
Glyphosate found in drinking water - can lead to kidney problems and infertility
Dr. Thierry Vrain, former genetic engineer and soil biologist with Agriculture Canada, speaks about his concerns with genetically engineered crops (GMOs) and more importantly, the use of Glyphosate (RoundUp).
Dr. Vrain’s background in the field of genetic engineering (for 30 years), makes him an expert on this gene technology. He explains how a cell is genetically engineered and what happens after this random insertion process through a gene gun and how it can have unknown effects.
Since leaving Agriculture Canada in 2002, he has learned much more about the process of genetic engineering and the BT process (insect resistant) and the HT (herbicide resistant) crops that make up about 500 million acres. His primary concern at this time is the widespread use of Glyphosate which is a powerful herbicide, mineral chelator and a patented antibiotic. Dr. Vrain stated when speaking about Glyphosate.
