"This is how and why biological changes and physical changes start to manifest; if the emotional charge is stored too long, it will rewire the cells into a state of 'dis-ease' ,which eventually manifests as disease..."
A few days ago I started watching the Netflix documentary 'The Final Set', the story of tennis legends Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.
I grew up watching these ladies on the court, witness to many of their exciting tennis matches, either glued to the 'box' or seeing them live at Wimbledon.
The theme of the documentary centres around their 50+ year friendship, and at times rivalry, as well as their shared cancer journeys.
As a keen tennis player and chronic illness recovery coach, I was interested in both aspects.
What immediately struck me as the cameras followed them into their oncologists' consultations and medical appointments, was the total and complete omission of looking at the bio-psycho-social causes of the cancers.
Bio-psycho-social is a fancy phrase which refers to the underlying root stress-emotional-trauma contributing factors for the manifestation of physical symptoms and illness. It's also sometimes referred to as the 'psycho-neuro-immunological' causes of illness.
The approach to deciphering these root causes in my neck of the woods is called Biological Decoding, the approach to solving chronic symptoms which I've been studying and using for over 30 years now.
A day after I started watching the Netflix series, I happened upon the true story account of Dr Bruce Lipton, and how he chose to (mostly) forgo the conventional medical approach of chemo and radiotherapy to successfully heal his tongue cancer.
Synchronistically I'd already started writing this blog a couple of days before watching either the documentary or reading his personal account. Seeing both just underlined the importance for more people to finally understand there ARE more options for healing serious illness, which do not entail harsh treatments (often bringing with them serious side-effects, as well as a lack of complete healing).
So in this blog, I'd like to share, why and how, after 30+ years of exploration, learning and application of this fascinating approach to illness, dealing with the root stress-emotional-environmental causes of symptoms is absolutely non-negotiable if we want to completely resolve our symptoms.
Initially you might think the term 'biological decoding' is to do with the physically body, and you would be right*...
But that's not all.
Biological decoding, in the sense I'm talking about it, starts at a mental / emotional level... and has a direction connection with what's going on physically in the body.
Most people understand their organs, tissues and cells have a biological function. We know this from our biology lessons at school. It's physics and chemistry.
Let's take the digestive system as an example, which more or less runs as an unbroken tube from the mouth to anus.

The biological function of the digestive system is to:
This is in a nutshell the physiological function of the digestive system.
But what if the digestive system has a dual function, which hardly anyone speaks of, because they don't know about it, because they weren't taught about it?
What if the digestive system has another purpose?
This is what we discover in biological decoding... or what Bruce Lipton refers to as 'epi-genetics'.
The digestive system (along with every cell, tissue and organ in the body) also has a meta (which means 'beyond') physical function.
It's meta-physical function is to digest feelings.
Fancy that!
It's not there just as a chunk of flesh to do a biological job.
It has an additional intelligence designed to do a completely different job!
It's there to process (and if necessary store) unpleasant emotional charges which are generated in our everyday life, as a result of how we feel about what is happening to us in our world.
That's why we find ourselves saying things like:
and many more phrases which are clues to how we are really feeling.
The cells, tissues and organs of our digestive system have the emotional function of processing our emotional life. (note, so do other cells, tissues and organs in the body, but for now we are just focusing on the digestive system).
So what does this mean?
It means that if we experience an emotionally upsetting event, which we do not fully digest at the time it happens, (or soon after), that emotional charge will get stored somewhere along the digestive tract (or potentially another part of the body).
Take for example the 74 year old lady I worked with many years ago, who had just come out of hospital, after 3 months of extensive and invasive medical tests and procedures to discover the cause of her excruciating stomach pain.
After spending 3 months in hospital undergoing every test they could think of, the doctors were none wiser as to the cause of her symptoms.
She arrived at my door desperate for answers and help. She was willing to try something new.
On her second visit, what came to light was the memory of how her Mother died, and the impact it had had on her, and how (unbeknowns to her) she still had unprocessed grief stored in her colon. Because you see, (as one learns in Chinese Medicine, which maps specific emotions to specific organs), sadness and grief gravitate to the lungs and large intestine. This is where the body is likely to stored unprocessed sadness, until it is cleared.

In this session, for the first time ever, this lady, who had been taught to ignore her feelings, recognized how she had unconsciously 'swallowed' her grief the moment she had felt it upon hearing of her Mother's death. She knew no other way. And her colon had intelligently stored that emotional charge for over 40 years, waiting for her to recognize (re-cognize) the emotion so it could be let go of.
In the moment she did re-cognize it, and validate it, her pain disappeared immediately. Immediately. Gone. Forever.
I cannot tell you the number of times I've witnessed such spontaneous disappearance of chronic physical symptoms, for myself and clients. (Note: whilst physical symptoms often do not disappear in an instant, it IS possible, and I have seen and witnessed it many, many times. So I know it's real).
Can you see why I might be a bit passionate about helping people understand this approach to healing?!
Just tapping into the wisdom of the body-mind to heal from within.
So let's look a little deeper at what determines which part of the body stores the emotional charges...
...Our biology!
Different cells, tissues and organs of the body are designed to store different types of emotions, or 'emotional conflicts'.
For example, in the digestive system, one of the emotional functions of the large intestine (colon) is to 'let go' of what we don't need emotionally. This mirrors the biological function of letting go of food waste and toxins.
If we experience an emotional event which we can't 'let go of', the colon is designed to store that emotional energy at a cellular level, until we do let go of it.
This is how and why biological changes and physical symptoms (dis-eases) start to manifest, because if that emotional charge is stored too long, it will rewire the cells into a state of 'dis-ease' which eventually manifests disease.
Why doest the physical body store emotional energy?
Because a law of physics says'energy cannot be destroyed... but it can be transformed'.
In other words, if we experience a traumatic or upsetting emotional event, and we don't resolve said event, the emotional energy which is automatically generated inside the body at the time of the event cannot automatically disappear. It will not dissipate by itself of its own accord. It needs our conscious input.
Emotions are a form of energy, and they usually need help to be cleared or transformed, and most people are not good at knowing how to do this, or even that it needs to happen.
Most people unconsciously store and hold on to their emotions, and this holding happens at a cellular level inside the body. And if it stays there too long, it will eventually distort the flow of energy (or Qi / prana) inside the body, rewiring the cells and organs into a state of 'dis-ease', which then turns up as this or that illness or diagnosis.
This is how SO much illness occurs, and most people are completely unaware of the fact, because it's not generally taught in our society. And more than this, we are often actively taught NOT to show or express our emotions. We are afraid of feeling our feelings, and showing or expressing our feelings. To our detriment.
There is much more that can be said on this topic, it is VAST.
I have written hundreds of articles and recorded many videos and podcasts on the topic over the years.
But for now, I hope this introduction will help you understand that emotions matter, and there IS almost always a direct correlation between emotional suppression and physical symptoms.

* Biological decoding generally refers to either analyzing complex microscopy images/cellular data or the therapeutic exploration of conflicts related to diseases. I refer to it as the decoding of the root stress-trauma-emotional-environmental causes of physical symptoms, which I do by completing a thorough root cause analysis of a whole person's life - because we don't heal illness... we heal a whole person, and their whole life. We heal the person who has the illness, not the illness itself (which is technically impossible).
