What is 'constructive' or 'destructive' thinking?
Simply put, it's the difference between the effects and outcomes our thoughts have on ourselves, others, situations, and our environment.
'Constructive' thoughts produce beneficial effects, whilst 'destructive' thoughts produce the opposite effect.
And from a standpoint of 'peace of mind', our thoughts will either lead to greater or lesser peace.
It's important to understand the nature and power of thoughts if we want to be happy and healthy.
So the question is, what types of thoughts are you regularly producing and repeating in your mind?
Thoughts are powerful. And they are real.
On unseen 'meta-physical' levels of existence, 'thought forms' are 'form' - but not usually seen on physical-plane reality.
For example, a woman having a near-death experience recounted (afterwards) how she could SEE her thoughts as 'clouds of energy' around her: every time she had a thought, it would appear as a bubble of energy in front of her. It shocked her into realizing that her thoughts were real objects she was creating. She had never known this before.
If you have studied the 'Devic' Kingdom, (a dimension of existence which runs parallel with the 'Human' Kingdom) you may know that devas are intimately connected with the creation of all objects in manifest existence, including 'thought forms'. That is not the topic of this article, but interesting to know.
So, the point is, just because we cannot see thoughts or thought forms does not mean they don't exist.
And thoughts have power, depending on what the thought is, and the energy (and emotion) propelling them.
As we become more mindful of our thought processes, and have a desire to lessen thoughts, we need to grow our self-awareness around our thought processes.
One exercise we can do to help ourselves is to learn to differentiate between 'productive' and 'non-productive' thinking.
This in turn will help us see if our thoughts are necessary or not, and if our mind is caught up in old habits of thinking, old belief systems and unhealthy patterns of consciousness.
Our goal is to lessen these old unhealthy habits, which are intimately connected with 'destructive' thinking.
Here are some hints and examples to differentiate:
Productive |
Non-productive |
Writing a shopping list |
Worrying about life |
Writing an essay or article |
Negative self-talk |
Studying / reading |
Worrying what people think of you |
Listening to someone empathically |
Imaginary conversations in your head |
Offering support to someone |
Angry thoughts towards others |
Asking for help, eg asking for directions |
Fearful thoughts |
Responding to a question |
|
Engaging in conversation |
|
Deciding on tasks for the day |
|
There are many more examples - as you become more observant of your thoughts you can add to each list, and discover your own patterns of thought.
It's useful to become aware of the difference between productive and non-productive thoughts.
